Weekend beach party results in assault investigations: Kamloops RCMP

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are working with School District 73 after a beach party turned violent over the weekend.

In a news release, Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says officers were called to a party in the area of Overlanders Beach, near the 200-block of Kitchener Crescent, at about 11:00 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 10). Mounties were told a teenager was found intoxicated and unconscious near the party.

Responding officers found about 50 teens at the party.

The teen who was initially called in was later revealed to be the victim of an assault by a small group of people. The victim was taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Evelyn says officers encountered more problems than that.

“While responding to the party on Sept. 10, police officers on scene were met with another assault allegation, as well as several verbally aggressive and confrontational parties,” said Evelyn.

On Sunday, RCMP took another assault complaint originating from the same party. This time, two other teens reported being attacked by a small group, including a suspect in the previous assault report.

Evelyn says the Mounties are working with school district officials — especially in light of the preponderance of party reports over the summer involving underage drinking, drug use, fighting, weapons, disturbances, vandalism and more. She notes several of the reports involved parties at Pioneer Park.

“We are asking parents and guardians to talk to youth about what responsible behaviour looks like, before police have to get involved, issue tickets, and make arrests,” said Cpl. Evelyn.
