KAMLOOPS — It’s rare to get one pair of brothers at WHL training, not to mention two.

At training camp, which wrapped up Monday (Sept. 5), the Blazers had the Minten brothers — Fraser and Bryce — and the Masters brothers — Kyle and Lukas — on the ice at the same time. The elders guiding the young ‘uns through the process.

“I get to play with him on a competitive surface,” noted defenseman Lukas Masters, younger brother of Kyle, who was invited to the camp. “It’s a more competitive surface than the ODR [outdoor rink], which is fun. I learn a lot from him.”

Lukas was an invite to Blazers camp, while Kyle was just traded to Kamloops last week from Red Deer for Mats Lindgren.

“Kind of luck of the draw. There are a lot of teams in this league, so to be able to come here with Luke was a great opportunity,” Kyle noted. “We’re both defensemen, so we got a few drills together. It’s almost back on the ODR when we were skating around like little kids.”

Also being mentored by a big brother is Bryce Minten, younger brother to Fraser.

“I haven’t played with Fraser since back in Vancouver Minor [Hockey], so getting out here and skating with him, especially on the big ice, is really special,” said Bryce.

Bryce was the Blazers’ seventh-round selection of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft and will stay around for some preseason games.

“So far it’s been amazing, getting to know all the staff and the other guys that got drafted here, getting to know everyone they’re looking at. It’s really cool skating with all the guys my age and competing’s been really fun,” he said.

The Minten brothers, both forwards, and the Masters defensive pairing went up against each other in a practice — a fun experience for everyone.

“We’re on the same team. They had us going two on two in a drill out there to see Kyle and his little brother out there. I think obviously it’s really good experience for the little brothers see their older brothers playing at the top level, and it’s really fun for us as well,” noted Fraser.

What about that sibling rivalry on and off the ice?

“Yeah, there’s a few mini-stick holes in our basement that are getting fixed now. There’s some downstairs renovations that need to be done now that I’ve moved out,” joked Kyle.
