KAMLOOPS — Kamloops-area doctors are applauding the province’s announcement of stabilization funds for family doctors.

Wednesday (Aug. 24), Health Minister Adrian Dix revealed the province and Doctors of B.C. were teaming up to provide $118 million to cover administrative overhead costs for doctors over a four-month period beginning October 1.

The funding averages out to about $25,000 per doctor, and is available to doctors who operate their own practices or work at walk-in clinics.

In a news release issued Thursday, the Thompson Region Division of Family Practice applauds the announcement.

“This funding, although temporary, should help local doctors ensure the viability of their practices in the face of rising business costs, and that in turn should be good news for patients,” said Chair Dr. Graham Dodd. “We still have a long way to go, but I’m hopeful that this funding gives doctors some of the stability they need while government and Doctors of BC complete the new compensation model for the fall.”

Dix also announced his ministry is working with Doctors of B.C. to come up with a new compensation model for family physicians. He expects that new model to be unveiled this fall.
