MERRITT, B.C. — Interior Health is advising residents and visitors in the Nicola region of an algae bloom on the west portion of Nicola Lake.

In a notice Friday (Aug. 12), Interior Health says the cautionary advisory includes the Nicola Lake Rest Area and Boat launch near Highway 5A, and North Shore near Harmon Estates. A cautionary advisory means that the presence of algae has been confirmed, but testing has not identified toxins, or no testing has been conducted.

During a cautionary advisory, Interior Health recommends avoiding any contact with water and using an alternative drinking water source.
