City expects to see uptick in foot traffic, revenue due to Kamloops 55+ Games

KAMLOOPS — We’re less than two weeks away from the Canada 55+ Games that are coming to Kamloops.

The games take place from August 23 – 26, 2022, and has 26 different competitions in a variety of sports.

People ranging from 55 years old all the way up to 95 are expected to compete in events that most would consider winter sports.

“Competitions range from ice hockey we have 49 ice hockey teams coming which is 705 people and then all the way down to cribbage a lot of different sports to kind of take in,” says Duncan Olthuis, Kamloops Sports Council Executive Director.

Some of the different competitions include dragon boating, golf and curling.

Nearly 3,000 people will be in the city for the games and with that, Kamloops expects to see a major economic boost.

“We are looking at, outside of the city of Kamloops, close to $3.5 million economic impact to the city of Kamloops ranging from the hotel night stays to people at restaurants, it’s going to affect quite a wide variety of businesses in town,” Olthuis adds.
