Amid controversy, Hockey Canada Chair steps down

CALGARY — Hockey Canada’s Chair Michael Brind’Amour announced Friday (August 5) evening that he would be stepping down from his position.

In a news release, he says, “I have listened carefully and intently to the comments of Canadians about the culture of our sport and our organization, and about our actions and leadership. I understand that the actions we have taken in recent weeks are part of the solution.”

This comes on the heels of heavily talked about controversy within Hockey Canada about players, coaches, and organizations’ conduct over the years.

One complainant alleges that a group of people sexually assaulted her. The person filed a lawsuit against Hockey Canada following the alleged incident saying eight players including members of Canada’s 2018 world junior team sexually assaulted her following a Hockey Canada gala event in London, Ont., four years ago.

Multiple alleged horror stories have come to light over the past year about conduct in locker rooms and within the arenas of many Hockey Canada clubs.

Brind’Amour’s term as Chair ends in November 2022, and says “immediate action is essential to address the important challenges facing our organization and our sport, which our Action Plan works to accomplish.”

“I wish the best of success to those who will succeed me,” he adds.

The next Board election is scheduled to occur at the annual meeting in November 2022.
