Local residents not surprised by Yew street standoff in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Before the first 911 call was made Wednesday (Jul. 20) afternoon, local residents were witnessing the trigger of a lengthy police standoff on Yew street. CFJC News was told that two men appeared to be attempting to break into a vehicle in the driveway.

“They probably spent a good 15 minutes trying to break into the guy’s car. They ended up wedging the door open so far, they were able to get a 2×4 in there. Finally, they just jarred the door open enough and the window just shattered. As soon as the window shattered, you heard the loudest bang ever. I actually thought it was a bomb,” said a local resident.

Following what sounded like two gunshots, the resident called police, who quickly set up a perimeter around the house, starting the five-plus hour standoff.

“When police identified a residence believed to be associated with the suspected gunshots, we did set up a presence in the area and contacted the Southeast District Emergency Response Team, also known as ERT. So ERT came on the scene and assisted with arresting three people inside of a residence. That investigation is ongoing,” said Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Crystal Evelyn.

After years of a mother and her children calling it home, the suspect’s house had been recently rented out to a new tenant. With the new tenants moving in a few months ago, came an almost expectation of bad news.

“Ended up renting to like the worst possible people in the entire world. And as soon as they had moved in, I told my husband, we are not saying anything to any of them because I get the feeling that they would do like a drive-by shooting and I don’t want that chaos in my house,” the resident said.

Police cars remained on scene this morning as the RCMP ensured nobody disturbed the property before they could legally search the premises.

For one local resident, staying in the neighbourhood may no longer be an option.

“They had the entire street blocked off and completely barricaded, assault rifles, and dogs. I definitely want to move,” said the resident.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and the Kamloops RCMP are looking for any possible information from the public.
