KAMLOOPS — A new dorm building for Thompson Rivers University (TRU) students may be built near TRU’s East Village.

On Tuesday (July 19) representatives from TRU and Stites Consulting Inc. will apply for a development permit application for the building, which would be built on the northwestern portion of a TRU property across Summit Drive. The proposed building is the first of potentially three new buildings on the property.

The area is accessed via Dalgeish Drive. There are currently five dorm buildings on the site with 144 units and a total of nearly 500 beds.

The building will consist of 80 units with 146 beds and will only be available to TRU students. The proposal includes 38 parking spaces and 40 enclosed bike parking spaces.

“The reduced [amount of parking spaces] is based on the acknowledgement that students living in dormitory housing in or adjacent to their institution are less likely to own a personal vehicle as compared to standard multi-family housing,” read the proposal.

There are an existing 210 parking spaces for the existing dorm buildings on the property.

If successful, TRU will construct, at their expense, a multiuse pathway across the property, connecting cyclists and pedestrians from the existing bike lane on Dalgeish Drive to Summit Drive.

“The multi-use pathway along Summit Drive is part of the proposed Summit Drive overpass, which is currently awaiting the results of a federal funding grant,” read the application.
