Industry organization raising funds for Nicola Valley abattoir project

MERRITT, B.C. — The Small-Scale Meat Producers Association (SSMPA) is launching a fundraising push to help build a meat processing facility in the Nicola Valley.

The province doled out $1 million for an abattoir in May, but SSMPA says its budget for such a facility has increased significantly since it was first developed nearly three years ago.

Now, the organization is applying for further support from the Local Food Infrastructure Fund (LFIF).

The grant requires its applicants to contribute 25 per cent of the budget in cash up front, meaning the SSMPA must come up with $150,000.

LFIF also asks its applicants to provide letters of support from those who will benefit from the project.
