Response to distraught man on Savona River Bridge leads to traffic backup

SAVONA, B.C. — The response to a man in mental distress caused a traffic backup near Savona Tuesday (July 5).

In a news release, Kamloops RCMP detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says the incident happened at about 6:30 p.m. RCMP were informed of a distraught man on the Savona River Bridge.

“Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP attended the area and closed the highway in both directions while they attempted to negotiate with the man,” said Evelyn.

The RCMP Crisis Negotiation and Southeast District Emergency Response teams, as well as the Conservation Officer Service jet boat were deployed, but the man on scene surrendered before they arrived.
