City of Kamloops to receive $2 million to reduce gun and gang violence
KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops will receive a grant of more than $2 million to address gun and gang activities.
At a council meeting Tuesday (June 28) Community Services Manager Tammy Blundell spoke to council about the Public Safety Canada Building Safer Communities Fund (BSCF), which supports Canadian municipalities and Indigenous communities of all sizes to find ways to reduce gun and gang violence.
The maximum amount of $2,069,465 will be distributed to the city over four years. Administration has not determined how the money will be spent — currently, staff is working with the BSCF advisors to develop a budget for the first year of funds. In the first year, the City will hire a full-time coordinator to run the program. The City plans to involve community stakeholders in the implementation of this program.
The creation of the BSCF was announced in March by the federal public safety minister Marco Mendicino.
