QUESNEL, B.C. — A flood warning has been issued for the Quesnel River.

In an update Wednesday (June 22) morning, the B.C. River Forecast Centre (BCRFC) upgraded the Quesnel River near Quesnel and at Likely from its previous flood watch issued on June 19. A flood warning means river levels have exceeded bank full, or will exceed it imminently, and that flooding of areas adjacent to the rivers affected will occur.

BCRFC is maintaining it flood watch for the Thompson River from Kamloops to Spences Bridge, Shuswap Region including South Thompson River tributaries, North and South Thompson Rivers, and other tributaries in the Cariboo Mountains west of Quesnel. A high streamflow advisory remains in effect for Nicola River.

According to BCRFC, a potential long-lasting rain event in the headwaters of the South Thompson, North Thompson and Cariboo Mountains is underway and expected to last into early Thursday. Uncertainty remains high for rainfall totals, with current forecasts indicating the highest rainfall amounts of over 40 milimetres being focused in areas of the North Thompson, South Thompson, Cariboo Mountains and Upper Columbia watersheds. Over the past 24 hours, 10 to 20 milimetres of rainfall has already been observed in areas of the Cariboo Mountains, and rivers are beginning to experience rapid rises.
