Nicola River water level set to increase

Jun 7, 2022 | 8:58 AM

MERRITT, B.C. — The water level of the Nicola River is scheduled to rise as the Nicola Dam operator has announced plans to increase the water flow out of Nicola Lake.

The Nicola Dam operator says this will lead to an increase in the water level of the Nicola River.

“Around 48 cubic metres of water per second (m^3/s) will be flowing through the Nicola River in Merritt,” the City of Merritt says. “Compared to recent freshet flows, this is more water in the Nicola than we saw in 2021, but still below the approximately 57 m^3/s that we saw in 2020.”

According to the City, the wastewater treatment plant is starting to prepare for the increased flows.

“By taking higher amounts of water now, when we believe it can safely pass through Merritt, we create additional space in the lake to store water for upcoming weather events.”

The City of Merritt advises residents living in low lying areas near the Nicola River to:

  • stay away from riverbanks – water levels will be running high and fast
  • consider turning on sump pumps
  • assess whether you want to make use of the free sand and sandbags provided in the parking lot opposite Merritt Civic Centre
  • prepare your 72-hour kit and ensure you have discussed your emergency plan with your family
