KAMLOOPS — Residents in Kamloops are gearing up for this weekend’s Hoops in the Loops in the downtown area starting June 3.

The community 3-on-3 basketball tournament tips off Saturday (June 4) morning with the Block Party featuring live music starting Friday evening.

For the first time in over two years, the large family fun event is being held in the city covering both the 300- and 400-blocks of Victoria Street.

Event organizer Shawn Garvey says people can head downtown to watch basketball players of all ages play each other with all proceeds of the fundraiser going to Kidsport BC.

“We have 71 teams from all over the province, some from Alberta, the Kootenays, a few Americans, ages Grade 4 boys and girls, up to some semi-professional guys and it’s going to be one hell of a weekend.”

People playing in the basketball tournament are competing for their chance to win thousands of dollars.

Garvey explained he just hopes the community can come out to support the competition.

“These events can’t happen without local support and the public support, if you’ve got nothing to do come on down, we’ve got entertainment and face painting and dunk contests and the three-point contest and to support the local businesses downtown here — which is how this whole thing started,” Garvey adds.

Competitions start Saturday morning just before 11:00 a.m. and will run until Sunday (June 5) afternoon.
