COLLINS: Same old, same old – We never seem to change

May 27, 2022 | 4:51 AM

IT’S BEEN A SAD WEEK ON MANY FRONTS.

While we have made so many advances in technology, our advances in making the world a better place to live from a humanistic point of view, are still relatively unchanged.

We don’t get along and we don’t seem to want to change that.

For centuries, we’ve fought, and we haven’t learned yet that fighting isn’t the answer.

We are a world with a lot of pent-up rage that we’re dying to take out on someone.

Let’s look at the past week or two.

Russia continues to pound away at Ukraine, killing civilians as well as soldiers. While supporters of Ukraine are delivering sanctions and supplying weapons, they stop short of supplying manpower because, frankly, they are afraid of Vladimir Putin, and what he might do in a state of rage or delusion. So, Russia will eventually win the war because we are afraid to stop him.

I was disappointed in some people who hurled slurs and boos at the Prime Minister Monday when he came to visit Tk’emlups te Secwepemc. He was here for ceremonies remembering the one-year anniversary of the confirmation of potential burial sites, believed to be those of children who attended the former institution.

Reconciliation will never happen until that anger is put to bed. Indigenous people are angry. They should be. But those displays of anger have to be tempered with a willingness to move forward, however slow that movement is.

Ironic, I guess, that Governor-General Mary Simon did not receive any negative comments. She is, after all, the Queen’s representative, and many are calling for the Queen to apologize and make reparations. But no boos for her, only praise. Instead, the person most responsible for her elevation to that lofty perch took the heat.

Tuesday night, Trudeau had to cancel an appearance at a dinner in Surrey when tensions rose. The crowd at the dinner was reportedly largely southeast Asian, and racial slurs were being hurled.

The PM wisely decided not to appear, which might have raised tensions further.

The murders of school children in Texas will wait for another day. Gun control is a topic all its own. I’ve covered enough sad news already.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
