Next round of ground-penetrating radar investigations at Tk’emlúps set to begin
TK’EMLUPS — Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc says the latest round of ground-penetrating radar surveys near the former Kamloops Indian Residential School will commence shortly.
In a notice posted to the Tk’emlúps website, the band says Dr. Sarah Beaulieu of the University of the Fraser Valley will direct the operation beginning “later this week.” It will be focused on the Chief Louis Centre within the CLC Roadway remediation.
Beaulieu directed the investigation that led to the confirmation of the remains of at least 215 children near the former residential school in 2021. The announcement of the confirmation shook the foundation of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, reframing the reconciliation effort.
For this next round of investigation, Tk’emlúps says Beaulieu will be supported by Le Estcwicwe´y (The Missing) team as well as the Tk’emlúps Natural Resources Department. It is expected to take over a month to complete.
