KAMLOOPS — On Monday (May 16), CFJC Today showed you the story of a young mother and her newborn baby who were transferred this weekend from Royal Inland Hospital to Kelowna General. The move was the latest issue related to the ongoing staffing shortages at RIH.

Royal Inland Hospital’s Executive Director Tracey Rannie addressed the pediatric ward closure Tuesday, saying the decision was not made lightly, and apologized to the public that the move had to be made. Rannie stated that the goal is the safety of the mothers and children.

“We started the weekend with staff, however we did have some short-notice absences and the difficult decision was made to close those services. The good news is the obstetrical unit was open on Sunday and the pediatric ward opened on Monday. Our hospitals work as a network and there are times when patients need to be moved to alternate facilities to ensure all the patients get the care they need in the right location,” said Rannie.

With staffing shortages continuing to affect patient care at the hospital, management is pushing to increase recruitment to the facility. Rannie admitted that Royal Inland is facing challenges, but noted it is not uncommon across the healthcare industry.

“We work with our local post-secondary institutions and we also look for our new graduates. We look for creative ways to bring in folks. We use different mediums. For example, Facebook and LinkedIn and different ads like that. I think word of mouth is great and I think that’s something the community can help us with,” added Rannie.
