Boogie the Bridge returns after two years

KAMLOOPS — Bright and early Sunday morning, thousands flocked to McDonald Park to run and walk for Kamloops’ favourite charity run: CFJC TV Boogie the Bridge.

After two years of limited in-person activities due to the pandemic, a sea of red gathered to promote health.

“This is the biggest health exercise that we do in Kamloops. You’re managing chronic heart disease, weight issues, Type 2 diabetes, but most importantly this year, it’s the mental health of the community that you’re really supporting,” said Mayor Ken Christian.

Funds raised through the Boogie are going to Western Canada Theatre’s youth programs, including towards the development of a new Indigenous Youth Theatre Program.

“It’s a pilot project that Western Canada Theatre has put on, and it’s just getting off the ground,” said Boogie founder Jo Berry. “We love to support charities that are lifting off.”

Kids as young as three, first time runners, moms with strollers, and experienced marathoners all took to the streets of the North Shore.

“It feels awesome. It’s great to see so many people out here congregating, having an awesome time. It’s good to have people back in business,” said one 21-kilometre runner.

“It was amazing. We’ve been training for a good six weeks at the school, and we had a good representation here, and we’re so proud of all our students and our staff who ran,” said one Pacific Way Elementary School teacher, who was one of more than 60 registered runners from the school.

“It’s been great just seeing how many people come out and embrace moving and running and walking, it’s great to see that spirit on the course. And we have a beautiful day,” said a first-time Boogier who was new to Kamloops and enjoying the sun and clear skies.

For some, the Boogie symbolized a return to the way things were before the pandemic.

“It’s just so nice to see everyone back together. I’ve missed this so much. Everybody smiling all along the trail with … the music, it just feels normal. It’s great,” said a participant.

The Boogie has raised over a million dollars for charity since its first year in 1998, and Berry was excited to have the chance to give back once again.

“The energy is so beautiful and so heartfelt today. And the sea of red and the beautiful sunshine, and having our whole Kamloops family together, it’s the best!”
