Kamloops City Council makes it easier for city staff to balance personal and political lives
KAMLOOPS — In what they call a move for inclusivity, Kamloops City Council has voted to allow Councillors to participate in meetings virtually and work from home when family circumstances preclude professional duties.
The motion, introduced Tuesday (April 12) by Councillor Dale Bass, will amend the current rules around virtual meetings. Current policies limit the number of meetings a councillor can tune into virtually, and don’t allow exceptions for family circumstances.
The City said that the job requirements of a Councillor can pose a challenge to those starting a family or caring for a sick family member. Working from home can allow a Councillor to better balance their personal and political lives.
City staff will amend the existing bylaw and also prepare guidelines to accommodate potential future members of Council with diverse needs and abilities.
