COLLINS: Attacks on mainstream media intensify

Apr 15, 2022 | 8:29 AM

CAN WE BLAME the Donald for the increased attacks on mainstream media? Certainly can. But this is only the latest in a long series of attacks on journalists around the world.

Journalists who seek the truth have been persecuted, prosecuted, bullied, tortured and killed in countries where governments want to hide what they are doing. A simple web search will provide a lot more information than I can provide.

And then we get to more recent times.

Donald Trump’s cries of “fake news” every time someone posts something to correct his lies has spurred the spurious, so to speak.

These people strike out because they have nothing better to do, no reasonable solutions to what they spew out, and refuse to engage in any reasonable discussion.

Many of them hide behind false names, and their answer is simply to yell, scream, spit and in some cases physically assault reporters.

These people are criminals, and that’s the way they should be treated.

They will say terrible things to taunt reporters who happen to have a different skin colour. They will tell them we don’t want them here. They will yell sexually explicit threats to women.

The most common comment about my editorials doesn’t deal with the comments, but about my weight. “that fat jerk should just shut up”, or “why doesn’t he lose some of that blubber”. And those are just a couple of the nice ones.

A comment relating to a recent column suggested we just wanted to get our friends on council back into office. That despite the fact I am not friends with anyone on council. Maybe a passing acquaintance with some I’ve talked with over the years but that’s it.

How these people expect to get traction with the voters when they have an issue that is not unique to Kamloops and have no practical way to fix it is beyond me.

In the meantime, mainstream journalists will have to put up with the crap, whoever it comes from, and do their best to provide the truth against increasingly difficult odds.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
