LILLOOET, B.C. — RCMP say a Lillooet woman was swindled out of more than $23,000 by a South African man she thought was her soulmate.

The woman told RCMP she had travelled to South Africa in 2021. While she was there, she met a man who appeared to be well-to-do and well-connected, falling “madly in love” with him.

She returned to Canada but made plans for the man to join her shortly.

Not long after her return, the man started asking her for money to help with various expenses, including plane tickets and diamonds.

Over three months of the man delaying his move to Canada for different reasons, the woman sent him more than $23,000.

When the woman cut off the supply of money, the relationship ended.

Lillooet RCMP are reminding the public to pay attention to the red flags put up by the most common scammers by visiting the BC RCMP Frauds and Scams page, Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or Canada’s Competition Bureau.
