KAMLOOPS — Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Frank Caputo is in France today for the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Caputo, shadow minister for Veteran Affairs, said he toured the city of Vimy and was walked through some underground tunnels.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever been more proud to be a Canadian,” said Caputo.

Caputo told CFJC Today that the day was very moving and he was brought to tears at one point.

More than 3500 Canadian soldiers were killed in the Battle of Vimy Ridge and 7000 were wounded.

The Canadian Armed Forces calls the Battle of Vimy Ridge “Canada’s most celebrated military victory and a venerated symbol of the birth of Canadian national pride”.

“It really contributed to our maturity as a nation … Canada’s standing in the international community was really enhanced by Vimy Ridge,” said Caputo.
