KAMLOOPS — The Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup is a national challenge that youth hockey teams can take on. The goal: performing positive acts throughout your community to make hockey more inclusive.

The U11 Blazers had a lucky morning at Sandman Centre. The real Blazers just happened to be doing some work – so their younger counterparts got a front-row seat to that action.

This year, the U11 Blazers from Kamloops Minor Hockey are the BC Regional Finalists for the Cup. Now they need the community’s help to move on to the final round.

“The important date is March 26th – Saturday – you can vote 10 times per day from each email address,” Head Coach Jeff Jakel explains. “Voting ends April 2nd, so you can vote every day until then.”

The Blazers are vying to be crowned the Good Deeds Cup Champs. To get to this point, they held a fundraiser for People in Motion and collected used hockey gear to donate to KidSport Kamloops.

“Helping kids who couldn’t afford it, so like, they can play the game,” Carson Wright explains.

“And helping kids with disabilities, who don’t have enough money to play the game,” Henry Jakel chimes in.

“Hockey is an expensive sport, so if you help families that can’t afford it then you can everyone play hockey and have fun,” Naven Chima says.

The idea for the fundraiser and gear drive came from one of the parents, Cassandra Karpiak.

“Cassandra did most of the work and put together the video,” Theo Patterson explains.“And signed the papers and did all the stuff,” Braxton Prior says.

Coach Jakel says the fundraising activities helped give the kids some perspective.

“It was a really good exercise for the kids and the families,” Jakel says. [They] really realized how fortunate our team is to be able to play this sport. It’s not a cheap sport.”

The next round of the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup will be decided by voting, which ends on April 2nd. The U11 Blazers have one request from the Kamloops community:

“1, 2, 3 – VOTE!”
