Longtime Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine will not seek re-election in the fall

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — The first and only mayor Sun Peaks has ever had says he will not be seeking re-election come October.

Al Raine has been the mayor of Sun Peaks since it became a municipality in 2010. Since then, the population has grown from about 350 people to more than 1,400 year-round residents.

Raine was a large part of establishing a school for the village, a health centre and many of the other services the resort now has.

“School is important, it’s the heart of a community, healthcare is important for the families that come here,” notes Raine, “so we focused on those things knowing that the people of Sun Peaks are very active and recreation is an important part of their lives.”

However, Raine says it’s time for a refresh. He hopes younger people will want to get involved with civic work to bring more affordable housing to Sun Peaks and continue working on reconciliation with area First Nations.

“I learned when we were working on the Whistler project a long, long time ago from a very wise planner, and he said, ‘You can never be a great resort if you’re not a great community.’ And that has always stuck in my mind and I believe that to be true.”

Raine says he plans to spend more time skiing and mountain biking on the hill, visiting friends and travelling with his wife, Olympic gold medallist Nancy Greene Raine.
