SOUND OFF: People need relief, not more NDP taxes

ONCE AGAIN, JOHN HORGAN AND THE NDP have proven they have no knowledge of what life is like beyond Hope. Not only has their latest budget done zilch to improve affordability for British Columbians, but it seems like the NDP is intentionally trying to empty the pockets of people in rural B.C.

The NDP have been touting an item in the budget that will eliminate the PST on electric heat pump systems. It’s a bid to steer people away from using natural gas. But what they fail to recognize is that while a heat pump can work semi-efficiently in the warmer climes of the Lower Mainland, people living anywhere north of Hope need a variable heat pump system to work in temperatures below -20C or so.

Not only are these ‘cold-rated’ models more costly, but most manufacturers would tell homeowners living in colder climates that they also need to have an alternative heat source to pair with it — like a natural gas appliance — because your heat pump will have a tough time running efficiently when it gets below -20.

It’s unclear why the NDP think anyone is going to invest in two heating systems at a time when the cost of nearly everything is going up. Life has become more unaffordable under this government, but they expect you to blow $25,000 or so on a natural gas system and a heat pump system so you can realize the PST savings on one of those products? It makes no sense, which is typical with NDP math.

The NDP’s budget also introduces three new or increased taxes, and get this — one of the increased taxes is on the purchase of home heating systems that use fossil fuels, like a natural gas furnace. The exact item that is required in rural B.C. to accompany the electric heat pump they want you to use. It’s another hit to homeowners in rural B.C. who often have no choice but to go with the more affordable natural gas option to heat their home.

And while people are adjusting their buying habits on things like groceries just to be able to pay their monthly bills, the government has decided to bring in new taxes on used goods.

New rules for private used car sales will tax sales on the greater value between the actual sale price and the average sale price. So, if you find a good deal on a used car for your family, you will now have to pay more in taxes on that sale. NDP MLA Brenda Bailey even accused B.C. families of committing “tax evasion” on these purchases. So now, NDP will punish you for attempting to find an affordable vehicle to get around in. Their own budget book points out this tax will hurt low- and middle-income households, especially in rural B.C.

A new online marketplace tax will require digital marketplaces for used goods to charge PST on those purchases if you pay through their website. Really? We need to slap an extra tax on a parent who’s trying to buy a few secondhand outfits for their baby who’s growing way too quickly? Or the teenager looking to buy a used video game console and save a few bucks?

It’s clear from this budget that the NDP need to get their priorities straight. Instead of punishing people for living in colder climates or for seeking out a deal on goods from a private seller, they need to start putting their energy towards measures that will help lower the cost of housing, gas, groceries and nearly everything else that is skyrocketing right now.

The last thing people need is more NDP taxes.
