Interior Health to phase out mass COVID-19 vaccine clinics in the coming weeks

KAMLOOPS — Mass COVID-19 immunization clinics will be phased out in B.C.’s Interior.

In a news release Wednesday (March 2), Interior Health (IH) announced COVID-19 vaccine appointments will move to pharmacies and IH health centres in the coming weeks.

IH adds it will continue to provide ongoing regular and pop-up clinics in rural and remote communities where access to pharmacies is limited. IH says more than 90 pharmacies across the Interior have appointments available for COVID-19 vaccines.

“During this transition, it’s still important for people to continue to get these vaccines when they are eligible,” Dr. Sue Pollock, IH’s interim chief medical health officer says. “This means getting younger age groups their primary series of the vaccine or the booster doses for people age 12 and older to strengthen and maintain their immunity. These steps will reduce the spread of the virus in our communities and disruptions to our lives as a consequence. Most importantly, these vaccines are highly effective against severe disease and hospitalization.”

The transition comes as nearly 91 per cent of eligible British Columbians five and older have received at least one dose of vaccine, while more 86 per cent have received two. Additionally, more than 57 per cent of British Columbians 12 and older have received a third dose.

According to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control as of Wednesday, 81 per cent of residents aged five and older in Kamloops Centre North have received two doses of vaccine. Kamloops Centre South is at 89 per cent, while Lower Thompson is at 77 per cent, Salmon Arm is at 76 per cent and Merritt is at 75 per cent.

Residents can book their vaccine appointment online.
