Kamloops Immigrant Services’ campaign encourages residents to learn about area’s newcomers
KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Immigrant Services (KIS) launched a new campaign to encourage residents to learn more about newcomers to the region.
“Know Your Neighbour” begins with a video of KIS interviewing local students of diverse cultural backgrounds, ranging from ages six to 16.
“Newcomers, immigrants and refugees bring so much to our region,” France Lamontagne, KIS executive director says. “Whether it’s variety in food, music and art, fresh perspectives, or needed labour in the workforce, newcomers to the Kamloops region make our community a more enriching place.”
KIS says its roots began in 1980 with the Kamloops Chinese Cultural Association’s response to a need for settlement assistance for large numbers of Southeast Asian refugees arriving in Kamloops. The Kamloops-Cariboo Regional Immigrants Society was incorporated after it recognized the need for services to immigrants from many backgrounds.
