KAMLOOPS — A rally to support the Ukrainian people will happen in Kamloops on Saturday.

The ‘Stand with Ukraine’ rally will begin at 3 p.m. at Riverside Park. The show of support will take place near the ‘Hope’ sign in the parking lot below the Sandman Centre.

“When people started hearing about what was going on in Ukraine, they started approaching us as the Sim’ya Ukrainian Society in Kamloops, and they just wanted to share. They wanted to tell me their story, they wanted to show me their support,” said Michele Huston from the Sim’ya Ukrainian Society. “That’s when we realized there’s a need to have a gathering place where everyone can do just that.”

Huston is encouraging anyone in Kamloops, even non-Ukrainian people, to come out and show their support. The rally in Kamloops will be one of many across Canada and around the world.

“The Ukrainian people have been suffering this type of generational depletion of our culture and our language and who we are since World War I,” noted Huston, who’s second generation Ukrainian Canadian. “What this is doing is bringing a lot of notice to what’s going on to our people. I’m Canadian, but I self-identify as Ukrainian Canadian, and so to have someone [Russian President Vladimir Putin] say that Ukrainians don’t really exist — it’s more of a Russian land — you’re eliminating half of me and you’re eliminating my history.”
