BC SPCA reminding residents how to be safe from coyotes as mating season begins

KAMLOOPS — As mating season begins for coyotes in B.C.’s Interior, the BC SPCA is reminding Kamloops residents how to keep themselves and their homes safe from the wild canines.

Erin Ryan, a research communications specialist with the BC SPCA, says while coyotes tend to frequent spaces with overgrown vegetation, forests, and wilderness, it’s not unusual to see them in numerous environments.

“It can be surprising sometimes when people see them, but generally they’re not interested in engaging with people,” Ryan told CFJC Today.

The SPCA tells people to practice “humane harassments” when dealing with coyotes, such as making themselves look big by waiving their arms and being loud by yelling and stomping their feet.

“It feels silly, but it’s a really important step in making sure coyotes maintain that healthy wariness of people,” Ryan says. “It’s important not to run away, but do maintain eye contact, keep making yourself big and loud, and slowly move away. If people have small children or pets with them, we do encourage them to pick them up and remember to not let any dogs or children try to chase coyotes or any other wildlife.”

Because coyotes are scavengers, Ryan says it’s best for residents not to leave attractants such as pet food or full garbage and compost bins. Additionally, attractants for small mammals such as bird feeders or fallen fruit shouldn’t be left, as animals like mice, rats, and squirrels can attract coyotes.

Ryan says residents should only call B.C. Conservation Officer Service if coyotes continue to be aggressive.
