Blazers win thriller in Everett, come back to beat Silvertips 5-4 in shootout

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers won a thriller in Everett on Saturday (Feb. 12), defeating the Western Hockey League (WHL) Western Conference leading Silvertips 5-4 in a shootout.

The Blazers faced a 3-0 deficit halfway through the game before Fraser Minten finished a power play chance net front to get them on the board.

With two goals in 21 seconds near the start of the third period, the Blazers came back to tie the game 3-3. Logan Stankoven’s wrist shot in the slot halfway through the third gave the Blazers a 4-3 lead and a chance to leave Everett with two points.

Although a late small skirmish, with only the Blazers’ Reese Belton getting a roughing penalty, gave the Silvertips a late power play. Jackson Berezowski put the puck in from the side of the net to send the game to overtime.

The five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period solved nothing, so the game went to a shootout. Minten won the game for Kamloops in the fourth round with a move to the forehand.

The Blazers have won two straight games and improve their record to 33-12-1, good for 67 points in 46 games. They’re first in the WHL B.C. Division and second in the Western Conference, trailing the Silvertips by five points.

Kamloops hosts the Victoria Royals Wednesday (Feb. 16) at Sandman Centre. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
