Governments announce $228-million recovery plan for B.C. farmers after floods
VANCOUVER — British Columbia’s farming industry will receive a $228-million package to support its recovery from devastating floods last November.
The B.C. and federal agriculture ministers are billing the announcement as the largest recovery program of its kind for the sector in the province’s history.
B.C. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham says the funds will cover expenses not covered by existing government programs or private insurance, such as the repair of uninsurable farm infrastructure and the loss of perennial plants not raised for resale like blueberries.
Record rains that combined with overflowing rivers in mid-November swamped farmland in several areas of southern B.C. and Vancouver Island, killing thousands of animals and submerging fruit and vegetable crops.
