Families in Interior Health encouraged to book COVID-19 pediatric vaccines as second dose eligibility increases

INTERIOR REGION — Pediatricians and Interior Health are encouraging parents to get their households vaccinated against COVID-19 before Family Day in February. So far more than half of children aged five to 11 in B.C. have already received a first dose.

The pediatric dose of the vaccine was approved in B.C. in late November and those who got their shot early in the campaign are becoming eligible for the second dose.

Dr. Shannon Wires is a pediatrician within Interior Health and says the vaccines have been proven to be safe, and effective for both children and adults.

“The pediatric vaccinations are a smaller dose than the adult vaccinations and they have been rigorously tested in the trials before approval and are followed from a safety perspective — very carefully. They’re safe, and they’re effective, and they are absolutely supported by pediatricians across the country.”

Immunizations are routine appointments but Dr. Wires notes some children have a heightened worry about needles. She says parents should discuss vaccination in a positive way leading up to the appointment to help their child feel less uneasy about the experience.

“If a child is particularly anxious or needle-phobic, then their family doctor or pediatrician may be able to help coach them through that. And (parents should) let the vaccinator know that your child is more worried about this so that way they can take a gentle approach in terms of initiating the vaccination process.”
