Hospitalizations, ICU totals increase due to COVID-19 in B.C.

VICTORIA — After decreasing slightly on Thursday (Jan. 20), hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in B.C. have jumped again.

According to the health ministry, there are 924 people in hospital with the virus Friday. That’s an increase of 33 from Thursday.

Of those in hospital, 130 are in intensive care, an increase of 11.

Nine more people have died of the virus, increasing the provincial death toll to 2,529. None of the newly-recorded deaths took place in Interior Health.

There were 2,364 positive tests recorded on Friday, including 655 within IH.

B.C. has 62 facilities with active COVID-19 outbreaks, including two in Kamloops — Pinegrove Care Centre and Brocklehurst Gemstone.

The province says 89.4 per cent of all eligible British Columbians aged five and older have received a single dose of COVID-19, while 83.5 per cent have received two doses. The proportion of those 12 and older who have received a third dose is now 37.8 per cent.
