Extra protocols and Canadian vendors have Ribfest organizers optimistic of summer event going through

KAMLOOPS — Following a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Rotary Club of Kamloops Daybreak is intending to hold Ribfest at Riverside Park in 2022.

It’s seven months away, but organizers of the three-day summer festival – with numerous rib vendors, live music, and family activities – are confident they can see the event go through in a safe way amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There are probably people asking how’s it going to go forward. We’re no different than anybody else. None of us have a crystal ball, but we’re optimistic,” Ribfest Spokesperson Bryce Herman tells CFJC Today. “We’re looking at a couple of changes. There will be changes implemented in Riverside Park by the city, and road closures around the area throughout the summer with building and revitalization projects.”

Herman says Ribfest organizers are looking at possibly fencing the area around the main stage and the six rib vendors and controlling the gates to let people in and out of the site at Riverside Park. He adds the fence would have emergency exits on it, and they can scan COVID-19 vaccine cards if required.

“We want to make sure all COVID protocols are withheld and maintained,” Herman says. “We know there’s some frustration and people are well ready for a safe outdoor event again. Although there may be some minor changes, I think the overall experience of being able to mix and mingle with your fellow community members and having three days of amazing food and entertainment free on the main stage, along with an interactive family fun zone, will be a welcome event back into the community of Kamloops.”

Additionally, Herman says they don’t have concerns regarding vendors being unable to participate. He notes Ribfest has vendors from the United States in the early year, but now all the participants are Canadian. Herman adds smaller vendors, such as ice cream and mini donuts, are all on a preapproved vendor list by the City of Kamloops.

In a news release, Ribfest states it has raised over $650,000 for local charities and organizations in Kamloops. Organizers estimate the economic impact of Ribfest 2019 was an estimated $1.7 million.

Ribfest 2022 is scheduled to take place between Aug. 5 and 7 from Riverside Park.
