Hospitalizations up to 646 in B.C., 95 people in intensive care

VICTORIA — Public health officials say hospitalizations in B.C. grew by more than one-hundred cases Friday (Jan. 14).

In today’s COVID-19 update, BC’s Health Ministry states 646 people are in hospital (up by 112), and 95 people are in intensive care (down by 7).

The province also states that the source of “Currently in Hospital” figures has been changed to bed census data starting today (Jan. 14). Currently in Hospital figures are reported by the hospital in which the patient is hospitalized, rather than the patient’s residence. There are 18 patients in Provincial Health Services Authority who are included in total hospitalizations.

Six more virus-related deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, for a total of 2,468. Two of the deaths took place in Interior Health.

Additionally, 2,275 new cases were reported today with 35,943 active cases around the province. The Interior Health region currently has 4,916 active cases and recorded 412 new cases Friday.

One new healthcare facility outbreak was declared at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Island Health, with 46 ongoing outbreaks. This includes the outbreak at Brocklehurst Gemstone care home in Kamloops.

As of Friday, Jan. 14, 2022, 89.0 per cent (4,436,446) of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 83.3 per cent (4,152,386) have received their second dose.

In addition, 92.3 per cent (4,278,594) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 89.6 per cent (4,151,964) have received their second dose and 30.5 per cent (1,412,008) have received a third dose.
