New art exhibit

Drawing on the walls at the Kamloops Art Gallery

KAMLOOPS — Clement Yeh is putting the final touches on his drawing, Movement in Time and Space. It’s part of the Kamloops Art Gallery’s latest exhibit, Marks in Progress. The canvas stretches from wall to wall in The Cube and depicts dozens of renditions of a dancer twirling.

“I always wanted to pursue drawing at a larger scale that’s more immersive as an installation. Something that you almost feel is an environment that you can walk into,” said Yeh.

Drawing is something all of us do in elementary school, but it is rare to see drawings on the walls of art galleries.

“Historically, drawings are seen as a preparatory work to painting, even sculptures, and it’s only been in the last hundred years that people have started promoting drawings as finished works.”

Curator Craig Willms is using this exhibit to change that notion.

“The idea is that maybe drawing hasn’t always been taken seriously as this finished product,” said Willms.

Yeh partnered with a dancer and a photographer from a local dance studio to create this work. He was also inspired by Pas de Deux, a short film made in 1968 by Canadian artist Norman McLaren.

“What I wanted to do was portray all the frames on top of each other but try to draw them in a way so that if people look carefully enough they can see every single figure,” said Yeh.

Alongside Yeh’s work you can see work from Christine Savage and Nathan Skyers. Marks in Progress opens tomorrow (Jan. 15) and is on display until April 2, 2022.
