COVID-19 hospitalizations up by nearly 100 in B.C., seven more deaths reported

KAMLOOPS — COVID-19 hospitalizations are up by nearly 100 in B.C. exiting the weekend.

B.C. reports 431 patients in hospital for Monday (Jan. 10), up by 82 since Friday. Of those patients, 95 are in intensive case, up by two.

Between Dec. 24 and Jan. 6, B.C. reported 404 COVID-19 hospitalizations. The fully vaccinated population accounted for 247 of those (61.1 per cent), the unvaccinated 144 (35.6 per cent), and the partially vaccinated 13 (3.2 per cent).

However, per 100,000 population adjusting for age, 35.5 patients were unvaccinated, 10.2 were partially vaccinated, and 5.3 were fully vaccinated.

Seven new deaths were reported in the past 72 hours, none in Interior Health, for a provincial total of 2,446.

There were 6,966 reported COVID-19 cases over the weekend, with 1,393 of them in Interior Health. Reported active cases increased to 34,551 in B.C. (up by 1,367) and 4,102 in Interior Health (up by 919).

The three-day breakdown is as follows:

• Jan. 7 to 8: 2,573 new cases
• Jan. 8 to 9: 2,287 new cases
• Jan. 9 to 10: 2,106 new cases

Elsewhere, there were 2,672 new reported cases in Fraser Health (15,491 active), 1,249 in Island Health (3,821), 1,067 in Vancouver Coastal Health (9,996), and 584 in Northern Health (1,139).

Seven new outbreaks were declared at healthcare facilities in B.C., including Sun Pointe Village in Kelowna. There are 43 active outbreaks in the province, including Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops and Mount Cartier Court in Revelstoke.

As of Monday, 88.7 per cent (4,423,328) of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 83.2 per cent (4,145,023) have received their second dose. Additionally, 25.8 per cent of residents 12 and older (1,197,440) have received a third dose.
