Women’s WolfPack basketball team drop pair of weekend games against Trinity Western

KAMLOOPS — The first weekend playing in 2022 was not a happy way to ring in the new year for the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack women’s basketball team.

TRU was swept in their two-game weekend home stand against the Trinity Western Spartans.

On Friday (Jan. 7), the WolfPack gave the Spartans a scare in the fourth quarter, outscoring them by 14 points and only losing by three. Elana Sireni led the way with 24 points.

However, the Spartans showed why they’re undefeated and in first place in the West Division, defeating the WolfPack 73-50 on Saturday (Jan. 8), which included a lopsided 24-8 third quarter. Anneke Cairnie scored eight points and recorded 13 rebounds in the effort.

TRU falls to 1-10 in the 2021-22 Canada West season, which is last place in the West Division. They’ll head to Langley for a rematch with Trinity Western on Saturday (Jan. 15).

The men’s WolfPack team were supposed to host the Spartans for two games as well, but they were postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The men are also scheduled to visit Trinity Western on Saturday. TRU is 4-4 on the season, good for third in the West Division. Trinity Western is 0-6.
