Slight increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C.,16 new healthcare facilities outbreaks declared

VICTORIA — COVID-19 related hospitalizations in B.C saw a slight increase today, with 324 people now in hospital, and 90 in intensive care.

In today’s (Jan. 6) update, the province reports 3,223 new cases of COVID-19 around B.C. The Interior Health region recorded 408 new cases in the past 24 hours.

Active cases are now at 31,817, and of those, 2,807 active cases are in Interior Health.

The new/active cases include:

  • 1,538 new cases in Fraser Health. Total active cases: 14,794
  • 662 new cases in Vancouver Coastal Health. Total active cases: 9,594
  • 408 new cases in Interior Health. Total active cases: 2,807
  • 194 new cases in Northern Health .Total active cases: 850
  • 417 new cases in Island Health. Total active cases: 3,765
  • four new cases of people who reside outside of Canada. Total active cases: seven

In the past 24 hours, three new deaths have been reported in Fraser Health and Northern Health, for an overall total of 2,430.

There have been 16 new health-care facility outbreaks within Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health and Island Health, for a total of 37 facilities with ongoing outbreaks. This includes the outbreaks at Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops, and Mount Cartier Court in Revelstoke.

As of Thursday, 88.4 per cent of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 83.1 per cent have received a second dose.

In addition, 92.1 per cent of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 89.3 per cent have received their second dose and 22.5 per cent have received a third dose.
