Active COVID-19 cases just under 30,000 in B.C., hospitalizations surpass 300

KAMLOOPS — B.C. reports 3,798 new COVID-19 cases for Wednesday (Jan. 5) with 473 in Interior Health.

Active cases increased again in the province and Interior Health. B.C. sits at 29,967 (up by 2,861 since Tuesday), while Interior Health is at 2,563 (up by 313).

Of the provincial active cases, 317 patients are in hospital (up by 19), but 83 are in intensive care (down by three).

Elsewhere, there were 1,739 new cases in Fraser Health (13,920 active), 840 in Vancouver Coastal Health (9,100), 566 in Island Health (3,631), and 179 in Northern Health (750).

No new deaths were reported in the past 24 hours. The provincial total remains at 2,427.

No new outbreaks were declared at healthcare facilities. There are 21 active outbreaks, including Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops and Mount Cartier Court Intermediate and Extended Care in Revelstoke.

As of Wednesday, 88.3 per cent (4,402,649) of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 83.0 per cent (4,138,255) have received their second.
