B.C. reports 2,542 new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations up by 78 since New Year’s Eve

KAMLOOPS — B.C. reports 2,542 new COVID-19 cases for Tuesday (Jan. 4) with 270 of them in Interior Health.

Active cases increased to 27,106 in the province (up by 6,295 since Friday, Dec. 31), and 2,250 in Interior Health (up by 458).

Of the provincial active cases, 298 patients are in hospital (up by 78) with 86 in intensive care (up by 13).

Elsewhere, there were 1,458 new cases in Fraser Health (12,729), 360 in Island Health (3,113), 329 in Vancouver Coastal Health (8,274), and 125 in Northern Health (737).

Four new deaths have been reported since Friday, one in Interior Health, for a provincial total of 2,427.

Nine new outbreaks were declared in healthcare facilities, including Mount Cartier Court Intermediate and Extended Care in Revelstoke. There are 24 active outbreaks in B.C., including Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops.

As of Tuesday, 88.3 per cent (4,399,771) of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 83 per cent (4,136,540) have received their second.
