Record daily cases continue with 2,441 new cases in B.C., outbreak declared at Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops

VICTORIA — The province saw another record day of new case counts, with 2,441 further cases of COVID-19 reported today (Dec. 24).

There have now been 1,613 Omicron cases confirmed in B.C, (up by 638), with 40 of those variant cases identified within Interior Health (up by 22).

As of Friday there are 10,415 active cases across the province (up by 1,676). The Interior saw 188 new cases today, and now has 778 active cases in the health region.

COVID-19 related hospitalizations saw a slight decrease today. According to an update from the Ministry of Health, 192 people are currently in hospital (down by 3), and 71 people are in intensive care (down by 4).

Four new deaths were also recorded in B.C, and one of those fatalities took place in IH. In addition, the province says a health care facility outbreak has also been identified at Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops.

The new/active cases include:

  • 1,001 new cases in Fraser Health
    • Total active cases: 3,554
  • 967 new cases in Vancouver Coastal Health
    • Total active cases: 4,571
  • 188 new cases in Interior Health
    • Total active cases: 778
  • 66 new cases in Northern Health
    • Total active cases: 236
  • 219 new cases in Island Health
    • Total active cases: 1,274
  • no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada
    • Total active cases: two

There have been 1,613 cases of the Omicron variant of concern confirmed in B.C.:

  • Fraser Health: 263
  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 959
  • Interior Health: 40
  • Northern Health: four
  • Island Health: 347

As of Friday, 87.8 per cent of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 82.8 per cent have received their second dose.

In addition, 91.8 per cent of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 89 per cent received their second dose and 17 per cent have received a third dose.
