Kamloops RCMP gives theft prevention tips for residents leaving home for the holidays

Dec 21, 2021 | 10:55 AM

KAMLOOPS — As some Kamloops residents pack up and head out of town for the holidays, they’re reminded their absence could be noted by thieves.

Kamloops RCMP say a break-in can happen during a day trip or a long-term getaway.

“Remember that little things such as posting you’re on vacation to social media can potentially open the door to thieves looking to capitalize on your absence,” Cpl. Dana Napier says.

Theft prevention tips include:

  • Not leaving empty cartons in your carport, yard or driveway
  • Closing and locking all windows each time you leave your home
  • Setting your house alarm before you leave
  • Not keeping ladders or tools outside of your home
  • Always keeping your vehicle locked, even if it’s parked in your carport or driveway
  • Arranging someone to shovel the snow or mow your lawn and park in your driveway, or making sure your home looks lived in
  • Using timers on indoor lights and tamper-proof, motion sensor lights around your home
  • Keeping your vacation plans off social networks
  • Making sure your house number is visible during the day and night
  • Installing a door viewer
  • Knowing who is there before you open your door
  • Getting to know your neighbours
  • Not letting strangers in your building
  • Recording serial numbers
  • Avoid leaving anything of value in parked vehicles and always lock vehicle doors.

Anyone staying home who sees anything suspicious in their neighbourhoods is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP.
