KAMLOOPS — A group of 20 Kamloops citizens gathered in front of City Hall today to support Councillor Denis Walsh’s motion to build a recovery centre for people with addiction and mental health challenges.

At Tuesday’s (Dec. 14) council meeting, Walsh asked city council to have city administration study the potential to create a wellness centre in Kamloops.

It would be located at the Tournament Capital Ranch, in hopes to give participants access to a combination of support services including access to nature, life skill programs and recreation — while keeping it out of the city centre.

Rally attendees arrived to show their support for the idea.

“We definitely need recovery centres in this city,” rally organizer Leah Moss said. “The fact that we have tons of social housing but there doesn’t seem to be any mental support or enough dry places where people can just recover rather than being around drugs and alcohol all of the time.”

Many participants expressed their concerns about feeling unsafe walking on the streets of Kamloops. City council considered the proposal for a Wellness Centre and turned it down — saying it’s beyond the city’s capability and outside the realm of its responsibility.
