KAMLOOPS — As the holiday season picks up, Kamloops RCMP are reminding residents that the giving season could be a chance for some to steal.

A group of volunteers from the RCMP and City of Kamloops kicked off a “Safe for the Season” campaign to remind consumers the importance of crime prevention practices.

“With the holiday season upon us now, the City of Kamloops and the Kamloops RCMP Crime Prevention team recommend shoppers pay close attention to their surroundings when placing their purchases in their vehicle,” Kamloops Community Services Support Liaison Sandro Piroddi says. “Make sure you are not being observed and if you have to place purchases in your vehicle in between stops, be sure to hide them out of sight.”

Throughout December, the Crime Prevention Team will visit parking lots throughout the city, creating a presence to help deter thieves, while also placing Safe for the Season tip cards on windshields.

Tips include:

  • Don’t think it won’t happen to me.
  • Don’t leave any of your holiday shopping in plain view (secure it in the trunk or cover it)
  • Don’t leave your items unattended for long periods of time (where possible, take things home between trips)
  • Do park in well-lit areas, close to buildings with heavy foot traffic
  • Do pay attention to your surroundings when you are placing items in your vehicle (make sure you are not being observed)
  • Do use a steering wheel lock
  • Do install an immobilizer or an alarm system
