NANAIMO — A youth captured on video beating up another teenager was sentenced to youth custody followed by a lengthy supervision order

The boy, 16, who can’t be named under the Youth Justice Act, was sentenced last month for attacking a 15-year-old boy, who was told after to strip naked and walk home following a Friday, April 9 incident at Long Lake.

The offender was handed nine months in youth custody on Oct. 13, followed by an 18 month intensive support and supervision order after he pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm and robbery, according to the BC Prosecution Service

He was credited for nine months of pre-trial custody and is now being supervised by a youth probation officer for the next year and a half.

A 10 year weapons prohibition was also issued against the unidentified offender.

The victim suffered numerous cuts, scrapes and bruises after being punched and kicked in the head during the incident on park land at the north end of the lake off Rutherford Rd.

A bystander driving by the area stopped and picked up the victim, who was spotted walking naked.

At the time, Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said investigators found a video of the incident which was shared online.

“The video, which is approximately 2 minutes in duration was extremely disturbing and witnessed by a number of youth who could be heard laughing and jeering at the victim.”

O’Brien said the accused made accusations against the victim, then without provocation began attacking him.

The offender threw the victim’s cell phone, wallet and shoes into the lake, then told him to remove the rest of his clothes and walk home, O’Brien said.
