KAMLOOPS — Criminal charges have been approved against a former downtown Kamloops security guard who was caught on video kicking a person.

In a news release, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cst. Crystal Evelyn says Richard Eldridge, 55, faces a single count of assault.

On March 18, a passerby took video of an altercation near a storage facility on Victoria Street West. The video shows a confrontation between a security guard and a man wearing a red jacket. It shows the man cursing at the guard before the guard pushes him to the ground and kicks him three times.

Eldridge was working for Lapper Security at the time. Speaking to CFJC Today‘s Chad Klassen more than two months after the incident, Eldridge alleged the man in the red jacket had pushed him and spat in his face prior to the altercation. Eldridge said the incident took place after months of abuse at the hands of the street population along Victoria Street West, including the man in the red jacket.

Fallout from the incident included Eldridge having his license revoked by the province pending investigation.

At the time Eldridge spoke to CFJC Today, he believed RCMP were not pursuing charges against him.

In the release issued Friday (Oct. 29), Evelyn noted the investigation included “reviewing and collecting surveillance footage, as well as speaking with witnesses and others present.”
