Water consumption down in Merritt

MERRITT, B.C. — “More than anything we want people to know that their sacrifices this year have made a difference,” said CAO Sean Smith.

Water use and water restrictions are usually a hotly debated topic in City Hall, with citizens often questioning the Summer watering restrictions and the perceived lack of water during development proposals.

Last week, CAO Sean Smith highlighted that the City is seeing a drop in water consumption this year.

“You’ll see that it looks like we’re as high as we were in 2020, but our consumption is way lower than 2020’s,” said Smith. “As the winter months get recorded, it will pull the yearly average down.”

The City of Merritt is still above the Canadian average for consumption, however Smith said that’s to be expected in a rural community.

“We’re a rural community, lower density than others. No matter what, with the configuration of our community it’s going to be higher than average,” added Smith.
