VIDEO: Thousands of catchable-sized trout piped into Nanaimo area lakes

Two thousand trout were delivered to Long Lake on Monday, Oct. 18, while 1,500 were sent to nearby Diver Lake.

“It’s a great activity, especially in October, weather is still reasonably nice and lakes are going to be stocked and ready for fishing,” the society’s Tristan Robbins told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Robbins said re-stocking lakes, particularly in urban settings, helps offsets demand created by anglers.

The society’s Duncan based hatchery, is confident their fish are managing fine despite record-breaking summer heat.

“That’s why we don’t stock those lakes when it is warm through July and August. As long as the fish can acclimatize to it and they hopefully tuck into a cooler spot they’re usually okay through the summer.”

Robbins said they are in the early stages of their fall release routine, which typically lasts through mid November.

All three Colliery Dams, Green, Brannen and Westwood lakes are also stocked multiple times a year with Rainbow trout.

Some of the fish will grow to several pounds if they can avoid predators.
