KAMLOOPS — B.C.’s police watchdog is recommending charges against a Kamloops RCMP officer after a June, 2020 incident in Brocklehurst.

RCMP were called to a home in the 1000-block of Newton Street on June 23, 2020, for the report of an altercation that may have involved a gun.

When officers arrived, they ordered all residents of two separate suites at that address leave the home.

When one man did not comply with officers, they used a 40-millimetre “less lethal” round and a police service dog to bring him into compliance.

Investigators later found that the initial call to police was false.

Because the man’s injuries were considered serious, the investigation was forwarded to the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO).

In a news release, IIO Chief Civilian Director Ron MacDonald says his review of the evidence found that there were “reasonable grounds” to believe the officer “may have committed offences in relation to the use of force.”

The file has been forwarded to the B.C. Prosecution Service, who will ultimately decide if charges are filed against the officer.
